FAQ

  • How big is the Brussels Animal Park?

The Brussels Animal Park is estimated to occupy five hectares, leaving some space for future projects.

  • Why are there no lions, elephants, giraffes...?

Most of our animals are considered "unpopular" animals, it's part of our mission to shine a light on them and show that animals don't need to be big to be interesting. We are also aware that not all species do well in captivity and thus we avoid housing them and focusing on animals that do thrive in captivity.

  • Where will these animals come from?

Our residents will have many different backgrounds. We expect most of them to come from zoos where they are no longer wanted or needed. Other animals will come from Belgian animal shelters, most of these shelters struggle with overpopulation. Adopting tropical birds, some species of pets and farm animals will help reduce the pressure as well as giving these creatures a new place to live. Several other animals will find their way to our park through organisations like Stichting AAP which help wild life to recover from, for example, abusive situations. They often need a new and permanent home, we are here to offer that to them.

  • Why is the collection of animals limited?

The amount of species are limited because of several factors. The Brussels Animal Park prioritises the quality of enclosures over having a broad collection of species. All of our enclosures have a large surface area often inhabited by one or two species, limiting the amount of species that can live here.

  • Why are there so little enclosures?

In order to make our park ethical and make sure that our residents are comfortable, we believe in offering large outdoor spaces. On average our enclosures have a surface area of 1000 square meters. This offers all our animals the necessary space to follow their natural instincts and behavioural patterns.

  • Can I do something to support this project?
